Navigating the web without encountering ads is virtually impossible in 2024. Not only has the advertising industry built a system that is both aggressive and extremely effective at surveillance, it has also ensured that every person browsing the Internet is exposed to more or less subtle advertisements. The consequences are disastrous: data centers are running at full capacity to design tailor-made propaganda, our phones and computers are compelled to spy on us and display unsolicited content, and a vast number of websites are made unusable by the invasive presence of banners and other video ads. This workshop aims to help participants implement strategies of avoidance, to varying degrees, to alleviate the strain on our devices' batteries and, most importantly, our grey matter. After taking a close look at the world of online advertising, we'll use OPSEC's tools and methodology to protect our online identity and privacy. Although totally legal, these techniques are part of the hacker philosophy that advocates one's control over one's devices. We'll then further discuss how pathetic and harmful online products have become, and how we can manage to obfuscate our footprint on the Web.
