This event is only for participants of the Summer Camp 2026 and not open to the public, want to join us: check the HDSC2026 Clouds to Commons Public Program

As tectonic plates came together and the continents hugged each other once again, the Earth's crust shifted drastically. Underwater communication cables drifted and snapped, and the internet as we knew it slowly fragmented.

No longer travelling through a continuous web of cables, the cloud became tidal and split into smaller, local networks. Along canals, rivers, and urban shores, ferries and community-builded floating infrastructures emerged as the new moving cloud networks.

Travelling back and forth across the IJ by ferry, we'll temporarily become part of one of these networks.

Through a series of score-based exercises, we'll download, store, carry, relay, compress, and archive, imagining under unstable network conditions where the signal flows with the tide.

Duration: 2.5 hours

Access note

  • Amsterdam’s public ferries ( GVB ) are free of charge and fully accessible. We'll be spending a good portion of the workshop on board with people who use the ferry to commute, please keep in mind that some crossings may be busier than others.
  • Bring a bottle of water, a small snack and if needed, a cap and sunscreen. The ferry also has a covered area in case you prefer to stay out of the sun.
