Talks on the subject of news photography, the decision making process behind its production and distribution, neural networks, deep learning and image recognition software.

During the first talk Amsterdam-based visual artist Coralie Vogelaar shared some of her findings that she came across during her quantitative analyses on popular archetypes of news photography. Coralie's work consists of systematic conducted studies revealing the mechanisms on valuation within our visual culture. She finds inspiration from quantitative research methods, currently A/B testing, deep learning and image recognition software.

Bart Jeukendrup is a artificial intelligence, distributed computing and data scientist currently researching the possibilities of neural networks. For the meetup he provided a super simple explanation of how neural networks work conceptually and shared some examples.

The last talk was by Frank Schallmaier, who studied photography at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and now works as image journalist and editor at De Volkskrant. Next to his work with news photography Frank is an obsessive image collector. His collections are exhibited in museums and galleries such as the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the FotoMuseum Antwerpen. Frank talked about news photography and decision making processes, answering the question "When the photo is special, interesting, important,… ?"

The program also included the Momentary Zine installation. The Neural Edition: Create your own zine with the NeuralCam.
