==About the H&D community==

Since 2013 Hackers & Designers (H&D) has grown from an informal meetup series at the intersection of art, technology and design into a large community of international designers, artists, coders, students and practitioners. H&D activities, shared moments of hands-on learning, cater towards active participation, mutual exchange and (un)learning. H&D likes to approach the organization of such activities as 'horizontally' as possible. That is, the way our events are organized is up for discussion, and we try to incorporate as many voices in the process of organizing as possible. We aim for a holistic and intersectional way of thinking about and with sustainability (socially, ecologically, economically, culturally).

==About this document ==

With this code of conduct, we go through the exercise of affirming and articulating the values and behaviours we aim to foster and facilitate amongst ourselves and in the spaces and community we create.

This document is written for the organization of H&D itself, to remind ourselves of our position as hosts who invite people, visitors, collaborators, and participants that join our digital and/or physical spaces. This document functions as a point of reference for accepted and unaccepted behavior in the spaces where we encounter each other. We hope this document can serve as a guideline for collaboration. If you have suggestions, please let us know. (find contact details at the bottom of the document)

We believe a Code of Conduct can never be finished. Therefore, we approach ours as a living document, written as a collaborative effort, informed by experiences, and in conversation with the references listed below, and updated as we go. Every time we rewrite it and read it out loud, for example at the start of a summer camp, we activate what it stands for and open the floor to additions.

==Why a Code of Conduct for H&D?==

We are committed to providing an environment of mutual respect that aims to always become safer and is welcoming to all participants. We therefore work on this document to make explicit what it takes for us as a community to create such a safer environment.

We believe there is an importance in defining a common frame of reference, protocol, to lay this down as well as answer the question: what do we do when, in spite of this, things go wrong?

H&D stimulates collaboration across disciplines, technological literacy, different levels of expertise, international borders, ages, languages. To bridge these differences, learn and unlearn from one another does not always go without misunderstanding, feeling excluded, unsafe.

==We expect...==

* '''Attentiveness to language''' - we use English as the main language of communication. We are mindful of the fact that this, for many of us, is not our native language. We use simple language and avoiding jargon to keep things accessible for everyone. If we use jargon, we explain what we mean by it.
* '''Dedication and commitment''' - people put a lot of energy and thought into organizing. Therefore: if you say you would like to come, please show up and be present. If you can't come after all, try to write to us or the workshop leaders in advance.
* '''Listening to others''' - we are great at what we do, but there's always an opportunity to learn something new from someone else.
* '''Shared response-abilty''' - we expect and encourage everyone (both participants and initiators of workshops) to take and share the responsibility for enacting and sustaining a safer and inspirational space, to be open to different perspectives and encourage one another to make our voices heard. We understand that no space is ever a safe space for everyone; claiming a space to be safe, and actively creating a space that is welcoming and engaging, are two different things. We try to aim for the latter.
* '''Individual response-ability''' - we don't assume. Ask questions, speak out about your needs (nobody can read minds), and accept that your needs might not always be met. If you feel you cannot express yourself in a group, please know you can always reach out to an H&D member.
* '''Willingness to (un)learn''' - If someone calls us out on something: listen, pause, apologize and thank them for pointing them out. We take responsibility to educate ourselves first if we weren't aware and are hearing something new (borrowed from Recurse and Feminist Club Amsterdam)
* '''Embrace experimentation''' - we like to nourish a space for experimentation and collaboration, so we manage our expectations accordingly!
* '''Adoption of an open source, libre, collaborative spirit''' - this includes giving credit to original authors and sources. Maybe you could consider putting the work you do in the context of a Summer Camp or workshop explicitly in the open domain, so others can build on it? Other licensing options are discussed below.
* A refusal of meritocratic attitude
** '''Respect different rhythms of learning and experience'''. If things go too fast for someone, they should always be able to address it and feel encouraged to ask for help. We consider helping others learn (when they are asking for it) a core activity in sustaining an inclusive community
** '''Value different practices''' - we celebrate different skills sets and disciplinary and educational backgrounds. Learn from each other and embrace the fact that you might learn something else than you expected.
** '''We don't shame people who do not solely use open source and libre tools'''. However, we strongly encourage to consider using open source over – often more convenient – corporate and proprietary tools. Free, libre and open source software allows us to look inside, learn from, contribute to and critique. The open character of the tools we use is crucial to a self-determined learning experience.
* '''Ask permission''' - we sometimes record our (online) sessions for people to learn from at a later stage. We announce this beforehand and give others the opportunity to turn off their camera if they prefer. We sometimes document on-site workshops for publications or sharing online. Before starting to take pictures, we ask others what they feel comfortable with. Would you prefer your face to be blurred out, or would you prefer not being in the pictures at all? Are you hosting a workshop? Please also announce recordings and screengrabs and give people a chance to opt-out.
* '''Introductions and pronouns''' - when introducing yourself, please also indicate your preferred pronouns. It's a good idea to add your preferred pronouns after your screenname on Jitsi and other platforms (e.g. "Margarita she/her") for easy reference.
* '''General video conferencing etiquette''' - having our camera on is not a must. But if possible, it is definitely nice for facilitators to see we all do, so they don't feel like they're speaking into a void. Keep our mic's muted unless we want to say something to the group. Using the chat is a good option to ask questions and make comments without interrupting the flow of the session. (see also <nowiki>https://etherpad.hackersanddesigners.nl/p/hdsa2020-tool-ecology</nowiki> for more recommendations)

==Unacceptable behaviour==

The following types of behaviour are unacceptable at H&D, both online and in-person, and constitute code of conduct violation:
* '''Hatred or violence''' - here is no space for racism, sexism, queer/transphobia, ageism, ableism or classism here.
* '''Harassment'''
* '''Trolling / bullying / making fun of'''
* '''Exclusionary social behaviours''' - in the form of well-actually's, feigned surprise, backseat driving and subtle-isms. We borrow these social rules from Recurse and find they are very helpful in communities that engage in technical practices and learning. Feigned surprise, for example: Dan: "What’s the command line?" Carol: "Wait, you’ve never used the command line?". For more examples, see also: <nowiki>https://www.recurse.com/social-rules#no-subtle-ism</nowiki>.

==Reporting & Intervening==
While we strive for open communication, addressing problems when they arise, we also realize the limitations thereof as the sole means for conflict resolution. We don't always feel safe enough, in possession of the means to do so, and so on. It's for this reason that we want to list what the alternatives are.

=== Situation that require immediate aid ===
In case of harassment, abusive behavior, or if there's something else making you feel uncomfortable/unsafe/excluded, you can contact the people from H&D that might be present with you in the space or contact those specifically tasked with ensuring the code of conduct is respected:

Karl karl@hackersanddesigners.nl

Anja anja@hackersanddesigners.nl

We are not trained in conflict resolution but are happy to help and mediate where we can. Don't keep what's bothering you to yourself, we are often better in company.

If we receive a report about abusive behavior we will will contact those person(s) involved to have a conversation with them. We will revoke access to workshops, activities and physical or digital collaboration spaces if an individual's unacceptable behavior persists.

==== Confidentiality ====
What you share is confidential. If we really feel like it would be important to share what you discussed with the H&D team or someone else, we explicitly ask for your consent.

==== Why reach out? ====
It's important for us to know how to improve and learn from experiences as well as make.

Sharing the responsibility of making the spaces and moments we co-create safe(r) and welcoming.

=== Situations that require immediate aid beyond our capacity: emergency hazards ===
The emergency number in the Netherlands is 112

Call 112 in case of fire hazards, floods, immediate medical assitance, acute physical danger, etc.

== Summer Camp ==
Together we embark on the adventure of learning, making and living together at the Summer Camp. With this format we aim for a holistic and intersectional way of thinking about and practicing sustainability (socially, ecologically, economically, culturally) and reknit arbitrary boundaries between work, play, leisure, maintenance and care. For this occassion, we updated the code of conduct and added a section specifically for the camp, taking into consideration the elements of co-living and the climatic conditions.

=== Be respectful of our surroundings (human & non-human) ===

==== Assume responsibility for co-creating the camp ====

* '''Divide mental charge''' - be active in signing up for communal tasks. If you are unable to make it to your shift for one reason or another, please try to swap your shift or let one of the H&D members know.
* '''Show up for each other''' - everyone made an effort to create a workshop
* '''Minimize loud noises at night''' - sound travels far in the country side, disturbing both human and non-human neighbors.
* '''Don't leave traces''' - here, we are talking about unwanted, unnecessary marks that prevent others from inhabiting our spaces freely (littering, leaving dishes, etc).

How do we compose ourselves in the midst of climate change? What does this very concretely mean for our presence here, at Het Wilde Weg, for the upcoming week and a half?

'''Mimizime the chances for wildfires'''

This summer has already started off with high temperatures and a longstanding drought. There are concerns about wildfires in the Netherlands

* '''Carefully dispose of smoking materials -''' douse cigarette butts with water, store them in fire proof containers, under no circumstances dispose of them on the ground.
* '''Avoid the use of heating and spark-producing equipment near dried-up vegetation''' - this includes parking cars away from dry vegetation
* '''Be careful with bonfires''' - only in wind-still conditions. Use stone fire-ridges and place a bucket of water and shovel close. Stay attentive and present while the fire is on. Leave when the fire is off and completely cold.
* '''Avoid storing flammable materials and items close to tents and huts'''

'''Use water considerately'''

Last summer, a water shortage was announced in the Netherlands and a crisis management team to divide the water. This is likely to happen again this year.

* '''Find inventive ways for minimizing and re-using water''' - don't toss cooking water, fill a bucket for dishes rather than letting the tab running, use toilets only for toilet business ad perceive rain as a moment to collect water.
=== The H&D COOP ===
Hackers & Designers (H&D) is a conglomerate of practitioners from different fields and backgrounds (technology, design, art, and education) currently operating between Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Brussels.
H&D is organized in a cooperative fashion, distributing responsibility over finances and decision making. Members of the collective are: Loes Bogers, Selby Gildemacher, Anja Groten, Heerko van der Kooij, Juliette Lizotte, Karl Moubarak, Pernilla Manjula Philip, slvi.e and vo ezn.

=== H&D Activities ===
H&D pursues its goals by developing annual activity programs consisting of interconnected hands-on '''workshops''', public lectures, performances, game and hack events, meet-ups, experiments in '''publishing''', and the annual '''H&D Summer Camp''' – a 10/14 day immersive workshop program. H&D organizes activities from the idea of a flattened hierarchy. Tutors and mentors become participants, participants become workshop leaders – everyone is taken on the collective venture of shared responsibility – bringing in their own expertise, urgencies and experiences. Along with organizing participant-empowering hands-on workshop H&D builds and maintains free and open source tools, self-hosts technical infrastructures and produces on - and offline publications. Inspired by intersectional trans*feminist thought and practice H&D stimulates collaboration across differences (age, gender, race, ability, skills, interests, species, materials) and aims to imagine and work together toward desirable techno-social and eco-conscious futures.

=== The H&D Network ===
H&D operates locally in the Netherlands as well as internationally. Since 2019 H&D operates from a shared studio at NDSM loods in Amsterdam, which serves as our ‘headquarters,’ where we meet, develop workshops, and sometimes also host our activities. H&D's overall objective is to stimulate and support exchange within a larger international network of hackers, designers, artists, and researchers, who find it relevant to critically challenge and actively reimagine monocultures and monopolizations of invasive and extractivist platforms and tools. The H&D network could also be described as a network of tool makers. By tools we mean software and/or hardware constructions but also pedagogical tools and tools for collaboration that enable critical engagement with, and through, technology. The network reaches to places such as Armenia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, U.S.A., Romania, Russia, Slovakia, South Korea, Switzerland, The United States of America, Aotearoa (formerly known as New Zealand), and Zimbabwe. Sister initiatives take off around the world and feed back into H&D, for instance through the H&D Summer Camp.

=== H&D Code of Conduct ===
While H&D activities are organized from the idea of a flattened hierarchy, it is important to ensure an environment of mutual respect that is safe and welcoming for all participants. H&D therefore wrote a Code of Conduct, and will continue writing, reviewing, and incorporating new insights into it. This document intends to make explicit what it takes for us as a community to create such a safe environment and what to do when it is under threat: [[H&D Code of Conduct| H&D Code of Conduct]]
= Hackers & Designers stands in full solidarity with the Palestinian people and their ongoing struggle for self-determination and liberation from the oppressive colonial State of Israel and its Western supporters. =

The Zionist apartheid regime, the murder of thousands of innocent civilians in Gaza and the West Bank, the destruction of religious sanctuaries and vital civilian infrastructures, the forced displacement of thousands of Palestinians, the suppression of fuel, water, electricity and medical supplies, and the weaponization of civilian death, fear and grief must end now.

Supporting Palestinian liberation stands by no means in opposition to acknowledging the violence caused by the attack of Hamas. We grieve the deaths and kidnapping of Israeli civilians and stand in solidarity with their families and friends.

We also refuse to see what has unfolded since October 7th divorced from the violent colonial history and occupation of Palestine since 75 years.

We are asking ourselves 'How can we care for one another and the (international) communities we consider ourselves part of?’ We believe its vital to continue checking in with each other, and resist the polarisation that we see working its way into our communities. Simplistic dichotomies and easy conflations between the zionist state of Israel with Judaism or Israeli citizenship, between Hamas and Palestinian civilians, bring us further away from locating and understanding the root of this systematic violence and our own implication in it. We urge everyone within the H&D cosmos to stay in touch and in solidarity with one another, and refuse shortcuts.

We are critical of the state of Israel as much as we are of our own governements that finance and justify, thus reinforce colonial violence.

This statement has evolved alongside discussions amongst H&D – a group of people who hold different positionalities. We took time to talk, read, exchange resources, ask questions,... and we decided to share this statement to stand in solidarity with all people who are facing arrests and violence for expressing solidarity.

As a community committed to education as a collective endeavour and one of self-actualization, H&D would like to offer a list of resources we have read and discussed leading up to and during the Global Solidarity strike of October 20:

= Resources =
This (growing) list of resources has been composed by members of the H&D collective as we found ourselves shocked and saddened by the suffering our friends and peers are currently enduring, and the lack of actionable responses from our governments. As an attempt to educate ourselves and engage in conversations with each other across our different positionalities, we started gathering and discussing these resources together.

=== News ===
News coverage can be quite disorienting. Western news channels are reproducing oppressive colonial rethorics. Social media, while amplifying many unheard voices, is owned by extractivist Big Tech companies, that further reproduce colonial violence.
Twitter is not actively fighting misinformation [1], Instagram injects the word "terrorist" into Palestinian users' bios [2], and Facebook blocks profiles left and right with no justification whatsoever [3].

We recommend considering independent media platforms that are not owned by social media platforms and big tech. Listen to voices from within Palestine; news channels and reporters in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, testimonies from displaced families, Palestinian historical archives, and so on. Amplifying these voices is another important strategy.

* Al Jazeera for live updates. They have journalists reporting from inside Gaza, The West Bank, Israeli (Occupied Palestinian) Territories, Jerusalem, south Lebanon and West Jordan.

=== News ===

== Hackers & Designers stands in full solidarity with the Palestinian people and their ongoing struggle for self-determination and liberation from the oppressive colonial State of Israel and its Western supporters. ==

== Resources ==

=== News ===

They are factual and exact in their reporting but also clearly leaning in the direction of support for palestinian liberation in their approach to journalism. They are funded by the Qatari Government. https://www.aljazeera.com/

''Al Jazeera could be censored by Israel after passing of new "emergency" legislation in Israel on October 20th, which gives the government the power to ban any media that poses a threat to the saftey of the country.''

* Histoires Crépues is an independent French Media project, that deconstruct colonialism. We recommend watching their video on the colonial history behind the Israeli-Palastinian war https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQH22pqOdDQ Very relevant in this video is also, the attention drawn to the language we use to describe what is happening right now in Gaza. The video is in French but the auto-generated English captions are quite good.

== Hackers & Designers stands in full solidarity with the Palestinian people and their ongoing struggle for self-determination and liberation from the oppressive colonial State of Israel and its Western supporters. ==

As a community committed to education as a collective endeavour and one of self-actualization, H&D would like to offer a list of resources we have read and discussed leading up to and during the Global Solidarity strike:

== Resources ==

=== News ===

The video is in French but the auto-generated English captions are quite good.
== Hackers & Designers stands in full solidarity with the Palestinian people and their ongoing struggle for self-determination and liberation from the oppressive colonial State of Israel and its Western supporters. ==

As a community committed to education as a collective endeavour and one of self-actualization, H&D would like to offer a list of resources we have read and discussed leading up to and during the Global Solidarity strike: [[Solidarity with Palestine]]
As a community committed to education as a collective endeavour and one of self-actualization, H&D would like to offer a list of resources we have read and discussed leading up to and during the Global Solidarity strike:

== Resources ==

=== News ===

They are factual and exact in their reporting but also clearly leaning in the direction of support for palestinian liberation in their approach to journalism. They are funded by the Qatari Government. https://www.aljazeera.com/
== Hackers & Designers stands in full solidarity with the Palestinian people and their ongoing struggle for self-determination and liberation from the oppressive colonial State of Israel and its Western supporters. ==

As a community committed to education as a collective endeavour and one of self-actualization, H&D would like to offer a list of resources we have read and discussed leading up to and during the Global Solidarity strike:

== Resources ==

=== News ===

Hackers & Designers Summer Camp 2023 Hopepunk: Reknitting Collective Infrastructures is happening 17 – 28 July 2023 with 30 co-inhabitants and is open to the public around July 23 & 27 at Het Wilde Weg, Sint-Oedenrode, The Netherlands.

Together we will embark on an adventure of learning, making and living together. With this format we aim for a holistic and intersectional way of thinking about and practicing sustainability (socially, ecologically, economically, culturally) and reknit arbitrary boundaries between work, play, leisure, maintenance and care.

Join us on July 23 and/or 27 for workshops, talks, readings, food, music, daily rituals, a swim, the night?!
==Hopepunk==
This years theme and setting of the HDSC responds to the widespread onset feelings of anxiety, uncertainty and dread caused by geo-political tensions, climate crisis and asymmetric distribution of wealth, power, and everyday resources, as accelerated by turbo-capitalist 'innovation' and planetary-scale computation. Supply chains are showing their brokenness. Uncertainty regarding scarcity of resources, energy prices and costs of living are hitting home, literally. The painful awareness of the precarity of our material and immaterial everyday life acts as a constant humming sound.

Surrendering to apocalyptic panic is not an option, as long as the sky hasn’t fallen (Haraway, 2016). Until then, we can practice making kin and compost, and rejoice in coming together, knitting and grafting ourselves into new interspecies relations.

With Hopepunk: Reknitting Collective Infrastructures, H&D proposes a critical yet optimistic approach toward desirable techno-social and eco-conscious futures that create connections across differences (age, gender, race, ability, skills, interests, species, materials).

The reference to solarpunk is not accidental. The science fiction literary genre and art movement envisions techno-futures in which humanity succeeds in solving major contemporary problems offering an optimistic outlook paired with hands-on practical approaches. Can oppressive regimes, such as capitalism, authoritarianism, sexism, racism, ableism be undone by solar power? It seems unlikely. Perhaps the core of punk futures lies in the DIY mentality – our capacity for generating pragmatic hopefulness. To find joy in materialization without extraction.
☆゚・*:.。.☆Embroidery Circle | Re-embroidering Language☆゚・*:.。.☆

I would like to introduce an Embroidery Circle at the Hopepunk Summer Camp as a recurring activity and space for slow and tactile expression. By looking at embroidery as a soft craft, we try to find new ways of creating together. As we reclaim a tool of patriarchal oppression, we look at its history and potential for resistance, empowerment and expression. Using this handicraft to focus, unwind and be in the moment. Moreover to follow threads, deconstruct patterns, understand connections, trace relationships, manifest new haptic forms and entangle ourselves with each other.

==Re-embroidering Language & Typography==
I would love to reflect with you on the language we use, the meaning of words, how our spoken and written words reproduce stereotypes, hierarchies and gender roles. To then be able to deconstruct and re-imagine sentences, words or glyphs with means of embroidery. I can talk specifically about my experience and tools for gender-sensitive language and typography. Language shapes our reality, so let's reshape it on fabric. We will but re-embroidering new forms of language and expression, slowly materializing glyphs that include instead of excluding – evolving into a network of thread connections and haptic manifestations.
This theme can be an inspiration for conversations and embroidery content. The process will be fluid and the theme can evolve as the sessions go on, flowing with the energy of the camp and what inspires us in the other activities.
==The Embroidery Circle will have different phases which can be repeated==
# Introducing: I will give a small introduction to different embroidery techniques.
# Meditating: A round of free stitching to get comfortable and be mindful.
# Exchanging: Using needlework as a way to concentrate during a conversation, following spoken word with needle and thread.
# Continuing: Re-embroidering language

==Duration==
Each Session lasts 1–2 hours. After an introductory session we can continue embroidering on our own and meet in recurring circles every few days.

==Participants==
A circle of 8–12 people would be very nice. If more people want to participate we can split up in smaller groups which embroider together with smaller inputs from me. Each session would be open for new people to join and contribute in their thoughts and threads.

==Setting==
We will need a place to sit at a large table or on the ground, whatever is comfortable for everyone. Enough light is very important, so it might be more of a daytime activity.

==Material==
Paper, pens, fabric, yarn and embroidery hoops. I will bring a base stock of everything and about 10 embroidery hoops, but your own fabric scraps and textile tools are very welcome.

==Accessibility==
Please let me know if you think, that you will not be able to participate in the workshop because of a limitation. I will try to make it accessible to all of you <3
You can bring other forms of slow textile expression, such as crochet, knitting or patchwork, if you feel more comfortable with these.

==Outcome==
The circle does not necessarily need to have an outcome, the process is much more important. But I think I would like to work towards an embroidered journal or manifest that summarises our thoughts on deconstructing and re-building language. We can decide to work alone on small pieces or together on a large one. It can become a collective blanket of word-revolutions or a soft book made out of future fabric.
==Bio==
Hi, I'm Laura (all pronouns welcome)
I recently finished my bachelor's degree in graphic design in Münster, Germany. In my design practice, I explore different realities of life, locate them in a social context and illuminate them from a queer-feminist perspective. The use of typography and its contact with photography and the moving image play a central role. I enjoy playing with language, exploring its fluidity and breaking its binarity. I have a great love for the tactile nature of analogue media, especially books. Therefore, I try to translate these mediums into social spaces. Collaborative working is essential to my practice. At the moment, I'm very interested in feminist science fiction stories and their potential to offer us new perspectives on the future – so I am very much excited about the topic of hopepunk. In September, I will start the master's program Non Linear Narrative at KABK The Hague.
Juliettehttps://wiki.hackersanddesigners.nl//index.php?title=File:Hdsc_day11_49.jpg&diff=29023File:Hdsc day11 49.jpg2023-09-08T12:38:29Z
Juliette:
