H&D opereert zowel lokaal in Nederland als internationaal. Sinds 2019 opereert H&D vanuit een gedeelde studio bij NDSM loods in Amsterdam, die dienst doet als ons 'hoofdkwartier', waar we elkaar ontmoeten, workshops ontwikkelen en soms ook gasten en publieke programma's ontvangen. Het algemene doel van H&D is het stimuleren en ondersteunen van uitwisseling binnen een groter internationaal netwerk van hackers, ontwerpers, kunstenaars en onderzoekers, die het relevant vinden om monoculturen en monopolies van invasieve en extractivistische platforms en tools kritisch uit te dagen en actief te heroverwegen. Het H&D netwerk kan ook omschreven worden als een netwerk van toolmakers. Met een tool bedoelen we software- en/of hardwareconstructies, maar ook pedagogische hulpmiddelen en hulpmiddelen voor samenwerking die een kritisch engagement met en door middel van technologie mogelijk maken. The H&D Bulletin is an occasional publication that culminates practical and reflective articles, conversations, scripts and manuals, experimental, poetic, visual, or otherwise speculative contributions from H&D coop members, critical friends, guests, and participants of our activities. <br />

This 7th edition includes contributions by Michèle Boulogne, dianaband & Heeju, Iz Paehr & Ren Loren Britton, and H&D. <br />

This bulletin was designed with Octomode, an open-source collective editing and designing tool for PDF making that uses Etherpad, Paged.js, and Flask. It was developed by our friends at [https://varia.zone/en/ Varia]. Varia is a Rotterdam-based collective and space for developing collective approaches to everyday technology. Here is how they describe Octomode:<br />

“Inspired by the non-centralized, tentacular cognition capabilities of the octopus, we imagined a space in which the artificial boundaries of writing and designing can be crossed; where writing, editing, and designing can be done in one environment simultaneously, allowing the format to influence the matter and vice-versa.” <br />

H&D has been working on a new version of Octomode in collaboration with [https://learningpalestine.net/ Learning Palestine]: a group of artists, academics, intellectuals and community members, who aim to disseminate knowledge on the history of the ongoing struggle for justice, liberation, and freedom of Palestine and the Palestinian People.<br />

For this special launch we are inviting Mitsi C. from Varia and Learning Palestine to join us to reflect on Octomode, as well as Karl Moubarak to share about ‘Resistant Energies’ a collaborative research project exploring infrastructures of resistance in the archives of IISG. <br />

This bulletin marks the (momentary and not conclusive) end of a series of publishing experiments, gathering thoughts and processes from recent collaborations, it serves as a time stamp, surely we will be back with some more printed matters in the future.<br />

Sounds from Earth is een serie workshops over het bouwen van een wereld, een live rollenspel en het werken met eenvoudige elektronica. We nodigen deelnemers uit om samen een fictief verhaal te creëren en een netwerk van kleine elektronische objecten te bouwen. Dit netwerk maakt (her)verbinding en communicatie met onze omgeving mogelijk. Het klinkende netwerk verkent communicatie voorbij het gebruik van woorden, waardoor we “natuur” niet kunnen benaderen als iets dat we moeten overheersen en waar we ons aan moeten onttrekken, maar als iets waar we deel van uitmaken en mee leven en waar we opnieuw op moeten leren afstemmen. <br />

De workshops staan open voor deelnemers met verschillende technologische vaardigheden en van verschillende leeftijden, van tieners tot ouderen en alles daartussenin. We brengen onze verbeelding samen om ons te verbinden met de omgeving en andere dan menselijke entiteiten door middel van non-verbale communicatie. Geïnspireerd door natuurlijke communicatienetwerken zoals mycelium, vragen we ons af hoe we een betekenisvolle uitwisseling kunnen aangaan met de wereld om ons heen en een dieper gevoel van onderlinge verbondenheid kunnen bereiken.<br />

Welke informatie verzamelen we om ons heen, wat is leesbaar, en wat begrijpen we, interpreteren we en projecteren we er betekenis op? Wat gaat er verloren in de vertaling? Kunnen we ons comfortabel voelen met miscommunicatie en het onbekende?<br />

Het maakt niet uit welke vorm we in dit woud hebben of welke geluiden we maken, we zijn allemaal met elkaar verbonden in een chaotische polyfonie. We hebben elk onze eigen persoonlijkheid, maar zijn zinvol als een geheel. De wind is een vitale kracht in ons ecosysteem en begeleidt ons door onze cycli. Zijn onvoorspelbare aard houdt onze gemeenschap in stand en brengt ons op mysterieuze manieren de energie die we nodig hebben.<br />

Een echo in de wind bracht ons een gerucht: de wind zou stil kunnen worden, wat het evenwicht van ons unieke ecosysteem zou bedreigen... en sneller dan we ons kunnen voorstellen... we weten dit, omdat we ons op onze eigen unieke manier afstemmen op de wind en op elkaar. We doen dat met de hulp van symbiotische metgezellen die ons helpen de boodschappen van de wind te kanaliseren en die onze zorgen en hoop overbrengen, zodat de wind er rekening mee kan houden.<br />

De wind begrijpt geen woorden, misschien alleen intenties door middel van geluiden, trillingen en slagen, dat is hoe we boodschappen versturen en interpreteren.<br />

=Achtergrond=<br />
Sounds from Earth is een samenwerkingsproject tussen Nederland en Zuid-Korea, waarbij Hackers & Designers, dianaband en Hee-ju betrokken zijn. Het onderzoekt de ecologische impact van moderne technologie, van grote datacenters die schade toebrengen aan lokale habitats tot glasvezelkabels die het leven in zee beïnvloeden door hitte, troebelheid en risico's zoals verstrikking van zeeleven. Het project onderzoekt ook de milieuschade die wordt veroorzaakt door diepzee-interventies en mijnbouw op het land naar materialen zoals lithium en kobalt, die worden gebruikt in technische apparaten, en benadrukt hun rol in de uitputting van hulpbronnen, geopolitieke spanningen en ongelijke verdeling van welvaart.<br />
