HDSC2026 runs from July 13 to 23 with an intensive hands-on program together with a group of 30+ participants. The public program aims to contextualise the Summer Camp and open up the reflection and processes of its hands-on trajectory to a wider audience. ==About the H&D community==

Since 2013 Hackers & Designers (H&D) has grown from an informal meetup series at the intersection of art, technology and design into a large community of international designers, artists, coders, students and practitioners. H&D activities cater towards active participation, mutual exchange and (un)learning. H&D likes to approach the organization of such activities as 'horizontal' as possible. That is, the way our events are organized is up for discussion, and we try to incorporate as many voices in the process of organizing as possible.

With this Code of Conduct, we want to clarify the values and atmosphere we aim to foster and facilitate. We hope it can serve as a guideline for collaboration, as a point of reference for accepted and unaccepted behavior in the spaces where we encounter each other. If you have suggestions, please let us know. (Find contact details at the bottom of the document)

We believe a Code of Conduct is never finished. Therefore, we approach ours as a living document, (re)written as a collaborative effort, informed by experiences, and in conversation with our visitors, participants and collaborators and the references listed below. Every time we rewrite it and read it out loud, for example at the start of a summer camp, we activate what it stands for and open the floor to additions and edits.

==Why a Code of Conduct for H&D?==

H&D stimulates collaboration across disciplines, technological literacy, different levels of expertise, international borders, ages, languages. To bridge these differences, learn and unlearn from one another does not always go without misunderstanding, feeling excluded or unsafe.

We are committed to providing an environment of mutual respect that is welcoming to all participants. We therefore propose this document as a way to define a common ground, and answer the question: What do we do when, in spite of all efforts, things go wrong?

Since 2013 Hackers & Designers (H&D) has grown from an informal meetup series at the intersection of art, technology and design into a large community of international designers, artists, coders, students and practitioners. Sounds from Earth is about world-building, live-action role-play, and working with simple electronics. We invite participants to co-create a fictional story while building a network of small electronic objects. The purpose of the network is to (re)connect to and communicate with our environment. It will be a 'sounding' network and allows us to communicate beyond the use of words and to interact with approach “nature” not as something to dominate and extract from but as something we are part of and live with and we need to relearn to attune to.


The workshops are open to participants with different technological abilities and of various ages, from teenagers to elders and everything in between. We will bring our imagination together to connect to the environment and other-than-human entities through non-verbal communication. Inspired by natural networks of communication such as mycelium, we ask ourselves how we can enter into meaningful exchange with the world around us and achieve a deeper sense of interconnectedness.


What information do we collect around us, what is legible, and what do we understand, interpret, and project meaning onto? What is lost in translation? Can we get comfortable with the miscommunications and the unknown?

An echo in the wind brought us a rumor: the wind could become still, which would threaten our unique ecosystem's equilibrium... and sooner than we can imagine... we know that, because we attune to the wind and to each other in our own unique way . We do so with the help of symbiotic companions that help us channeling messages of the wind and carry our worries and hopes for the wind to consider.


The wind doesn't understand words, only maybe intentions through sounds, vibrations and blows, that is how we send and interpret messages.


Our companions are made of extracted minerals and oils transformed into components that we found discarded from others in our ecosystem...

Sounds from Earth is a collaborative project between the Netherlands and South Korea, involving Hackers & Designers, dianaband, and Hee-ju. It explores the ecological impacts of modern technology, from large data centers that harm local habitats to fiber optic cables that affect marine life through heat, turbidity, and risks like sea life entanglement. The project also examines the environmental damage caused by deep-sea interventions and terrestrial mining for materials like lithium and cobalt, used in tech devices, highlighting their role in resource depletion, geopolitical tensions, and unequal wealth distribution.

Sounds from Earth is een serie workshops over het bouwen van een wereld, een live rollenspel en het werken met eenvoudige elektronica. We nodigen deelnemers uit om samen een fictief verhaal te creëren en een netwerk van kleine elektronische objecten te bouwen. Dit netwerk maakt (her)verbinding en communicatie met onze omgeving mogelijk. Het klinkende netwerk verkent communicatie voorbij het gebruik van woorden, waardoor we “natuur” niet kunnen benaderen als iets dat we moeten overheersen en waar we ons aan moeten onttrekken, maar als iets waar we deel van uitmaken en mee leven en waar we opnieuw op moeten leren afstemmen.

De workshops staan open voor deelnemers met verschillende technologische vaardigheden en van verschillende leeftijden, van tieners tot ouderen en alles daartussenin. We brengen onze verbeelding samen om ons te verbinden met de omgeving en andere dan menselijke entiteiten door middel van non-verbale communicatie. Geïnspireerd door natuurlijke communicatienetwerken zoals mycelium, vragen we ons af hoe we een betekenisvolle uitwisseling kunnen aangaan met de wereld om ons heen en een dieper gevoel van onderlinge verbondenheid kunnen bereiken.

''Samen zijn we een bos!

Het maakt niet uit welke vorm we in dit woud hebben of welke geluiden we maken, we zijn allemaal met elkaar verbonden in een chaotische polyfonie. We hebben elk onze eigen persoonlijkheid, maar zijn zinvol als een geheel. De wind is een vitale kracht in ons ecosysteem en begeleidt ons door onze cycli. Zijn onvoorspelbare aard houdt onze gemeenschap in stand en brengt ons op mysterieuze manieren de energie die we nodig hebben.

Een echo in de wind bracht ons een gerucht: de wind zou stil kunnen worden, wat het evenwicht van ons unieke ecosysteem zou bedreigen... en sneller dan we ons kunnen voorstellen... we weten dit, omdat we ons op onze eigen unieke manier afstemmen op de wind en op elkaar. We doen dat met de hulp van symbiotische metgezellen die ons helpen de boodschappen van de wind te kanaliseren en die onze zorgen en hoop overbrengen, zodat de wind er rekening mee kan houden.

De wind begrijpt geen woorden, misschien alleen intenties door middel van geluiden, trillingen en slagen, dat is hoe we boodschappen versturen en interpreteren.

Onze metgezellen zijn gemaakt van geëxtraheerde mineralen en oliën die zijn omgevormd tot componenten die anderen in ons ecosysteem hebben weggegooid...maar wij ze weer vonden

=Achtergrond=
Sounds from Earth is een samenwerkingsproject tussen Nederland en Zuid-Korea, waarbij Hackers & Designers, dianaband en Hee-ju betrokken zijn. Het onderzoekt de ecologische impact van moderne technologie, van grote datacenters die schade toebrengen aan lokale habitats tot glasvezelkabels die het leven in zee beïnvloeden door hitte, troebelheid en risico's zoals verstrikking van zeeleven. Het project onderzoekt ook de milieuschade die wordt veroorzaakt door diepzee-interventies en mijnbouw op het land naar materialen zoals lithium en kobalt, die worden gebruikt in technische apparaten, en benadrukt hun rol in de uitputting van hulpbronnen, geopolitieke spanningen en ongelijke verdeling van welvaart.

Sounds from Earth is een serie workshops over het bouwen van een wereld, een live rollenspel en het werken met eenvoudige elektronica. We nodigen deelnemers uit om samen een fictief verhaal te creëren en een netwerk van kleine elektronische objecten te bouwen. Dit netwerk maakt (her)verbinding en communicatie met onze omgeving mogelijk. Het klinkende netwerk verkent communicatie voorbij het gebruik van woorden, waardoor we “natuur” niet kunnen benaderen als iets dat we moeten overheersen en waar we ons aan moeten onttrekken, maar als iets waar we deel van uitmaken en mee leven en waar we opnieuw op moeten leren afstemmen.

De workshops staan open voor deelnemers met verschillende technologische vaardigheden en van verschillende leeftijden, van tieners tot ouderen en alles daartussenin. We brengen onze verbeelding samen om ons te verbinden met de omgeving en andere dan menselijke entiteiten door middel van non-verbale communicatie. Geïnspireerd door natuurlijke communicatienetwerken zoals mycelium, vragen we ons af hoe we een betekenisvolle uitwisseling kunnen aangaan met de wereld om ons heen en een dieper gevoel van onderlinge verbondenheid kunnen bereiken.

Welke informatie verzamelen we om ons heen, wat is leesbaar, en wat begrijpen we, interpreteren we en projecteren we er betekenis op? Wat gaat er verloren in de vertaling? Kunnen we ons comfortabel voelen met miscommunicatie en het onbekende?

Zijn onvoorspelbare aard houdt onze gemeenschap in stand en brengt ons op mysterieuze manieren de energie die we nodig hebben.

Een echo in de wind bracht ons een gerucht: de wind zou stil kunnen worden, wat het evenwicht van ons unieke ecosysteem zou bedreigen... en sneller dan we ons kunnen voorstellen... we weten dit, omdat we ons op onze eigen unieke manier afstemmen op de wind en op elkaar. We doen dat met de hulp van symbiotische metgezellen die ons helpen de boodschappen van de wind te kanaliseren en die onze zorgen en hoop overbrengen, zodat de wind er rekening mee kan houden.

De wind begrijpt geen woorden, misschien alleen intenties door middel van geluiden, trillingen en slagen, dat is hoe we boodschappen versturen en interpreteren.

Onze metgezellen zijn gemaakt van geëxtraheerde mineralen en oliën die zijn omgevormd tot componenten die anderen in ons ecosysteem hebben weggegooid...maar wij ze weer vonden

Sounds from Earth is een serie workshops over het bouwen van een wereld, een live rollenspel en het werken met eenvoudige elektronica. We nodigen deelnemers uit om samen een fictief verhaal te creëren en een netwerk van kleine elektronische objecten te bouwen. Dit netwerk maakt (her)verbinding en communicatie met onze omgeving mogelijk. Het klinkende netwerk verkent communicatie voorbij het gebruik van woorden, waardoor we “natuur” niet kunnen benaderen als iets dat we moeten overheersen en waar we ons aan moeten onttrekken, maar als iets waar we deel van uitmaken en mee leven en waar we opnieuw op moeten leren afstemmen.

De workshops staan open voor deelnemers met verschillende technologische vaardigheden en van verschillende leeftijden, van tieners tot ouderen en alles daartussenin. We brengen onze verbeelding samen om ons te verbinden met de omgeving en andere dan menselijke entiteiten door middel van non-verbale communicatie. Geïnspireerd door natuurlijke communicatienetwerken zoals mycelium, vragen we ons af hoe we een betekenisvolle uitwisseling kunnen aangaan met de wereld om ons heen en een dieper gevoel van onderlinge verbondenheid kunnen bereiken.

Welke informatie verzamelen we om ons heen, wat is leesbaar, en wat begrijpen we, interpreteren we en projecteren we er betekenis op? Wat gaat er verloren in de vertaling? Kunnen we ons comfortabel voelen met miscommunicatie en het onbekende?

Het maakt niet uit welke vorm we in dit woud hebben of welke geluiden we maken, we zijn allemaal met elkaar verbonden in een chaotische polyfonie. We hebben elk onze eigen persoonlijkheid, maar zijn zinvol als een geheel. De wind is een vitale kracht in ons ecosysteem en begeleidt ons door onze cycli. Zijn onvoorspelbare aard houdt onze gemeenschap in stand en brengt ons op mysterieuze manieren de energie die we nodig hebben.

Een echo in de wind bracht ons een gerucht: de wind zou stil kunnen worden, wat het evenwicht van ons unieke ecosysteem zou bedreigen... en sneller dan we ons kunnen voorstellen... we weten dit, omdat we ons op onze eigen unieke manier afstemmen op de wind en op elkaar. We doen dat met de hulp van symbiotische metgezellen die ons helpen de boodschappen van de wind te kanaliseren en die onze zorgen en hoop overbrengen, zodat de wind er rekening mee kan houden.

Sounds from Earth is een serie workshops over het bouwen van een wereld, een live rollenspel en het werken met eenvoudige elektronica. We nodigen deelnemers uit om samen een fictief verhaal te creëren en een netwerk van kleine elektronische objecten te bouwen. Dit netwerk maakt (her)verbinding en communicatie met onze omgeving mogelijk. Het klinkende netwerk verkent communicatie voorbij het gebruik van woorden, waardoor we “natuur” niet kunnen benaderen als iets dat we moeten overheersen en waar we ons aan moeten onttrekken, maar als iets waar we deel van uitmaken en mee leven en waar we opnieuw op moeten leren afstemmen.

De workshops staan open voor deelnemers met verschillende technologische vaardigheden en van verschillende leeftijden, van tieners tot ouderen en alles daartussenin. We brengen onze verbeelding samen om ons te verbinden met de omgeving en andere dan menselijke entiteiten door middel van non-verbale communicatie. Geïnspireerd door natuurlijke communicatienetwerken zoals mycelium, vragen we ons af hoe we een betekenisvolle uitwisseling kunnen aangaan met de wereld om ons heen en een dieper gevoel van onderlinge verbondenheid kunnen bereiken.

it doesn't matter what shape we have in this forest or what sounds we make, we are all interconnected into a chaotic polyphony. We each have our own personality but make sense as a whole. The wind is a vital force in our ecosystem and accompanies us through our cycles. Its unpredictable nature maintains our community, it's bringing us the energy we need in mysterious ways.

We nodigen deelnemers uit om samen een fictief verhaal te creëren en een netwerk van kleine elektronische objecten te bouwen. Dit netwerk maakt (her)verbinding en communicatie met onze omgeving mogelijk. =Background=
Sounds from Earth is a collaborative artistic exploration between the Netherlands and South-Korea, Hackers & Designers, dianaband and Hee-ju, that aims to create a space to critically and imaginatively address the ecological impact of user technologies: from the construction of large-scale data centers that damage or even erase local habitats, to the fiber optic cables that impact the marine environment through heat, turbidity (during cable burial), risk of fatal entanglement of sea life and the introduction of artificial substrates into the ecosystem. Interventions into the deep-sea environment as well as terrestrial mining used to source materials such as lithium or cobalt for chips and other components inside our communication devices and network infrastructures are exhausting the earth and are the cause of geopolitical tensions and asymmetrical distribution of wealth and power.


The workshop is developed over different iterations, during which participants join in co-creating new collective imaginaries and narratives around alternative, regenerative formats and devices for networked communication and eco-conscious interfacing with our environments. The workshops are open to participants with different technological abilities and of various ages, from teenagers to elders and everything in between.

Na 2 heerlijke weken in Korea waarin H&D, dianaband en Hee-ju de eerste iteraties van de workshop ontwikkelden en faciliteerden, komt Sounds from Earth nu eindelijk naar Amsterdam!

Sounds from Earth is een serie workshops over het bouwen van een wereld, een live rollenspel en het werken met eenvoudige elektronica. We nodigen deelnemers uit om een fictief verhaal te co-creëren terwijl ze een netwerk bouwen van kleine elektronische objecten die (her)verbinding met en communicatie met onze omgeving mogelijk maken. Het klinkende netwerk verkent communicatie voorbij het gebruik van woorden, waardoor we “natuur” niet kunnen benaderen als iets dat we moeten overheersen en waar we ons aan moeten onttrekken, maar als iets waar we deel van uitmaken en mee leven en waar we opnieuw op moeten leren afstemmen.

=Achtergrond=
Sounds from Earth is een artistiek samenwerkingsproject tussen Nederland en Zuid-Korea, Hackers & Designers, dianaband en Hee-ju, met als doel een ruimte te creëren waarin op kritische en verbeeldingsvolle wijze de ecologische impact van gebruikerstechnologieën aan de orde wordt gesteld: van de bouw van grootschalige datacenters die lokale habitats beschadigen of zelfs uitwissen, tot de glasvezelkabels die het mariene milieu beïnvloeden door hitte, troebelheid (tijdens het begraven van kabels), het risico op fatale verstrikking van zeeleven en de introductie van kunstmatige substraten in het ecosysteem. Ingrepen in het diepzeemilieu en mijnbouw op het land om materialen als lithium of kobalt te winnen voor chips en andere onderdelen in onze communicatieapparatuur en netwerkinfrastructuren putten de aarde uit en zijn de oorzaak van geopolitieke spanningen en een asymmetrische verdeling van rijkdom en macht.

De workshop wordt ontwikkeld in verschillende iteraties, waarbij deelnemers deelnemen aan het co-creëren van nieuwe collectieve voorstellingen en verhalen rond alternatieve, regeneratieve formaten en apparaten voor netwerkcommunicatie en milieubewuste interfacing met onze omgeving. De workshops staan open voor deelnemers met verschillende technologische vaardigheden en van verschillende leeftijden, van tieners tot ouderen en alles daartussenin.

In deze workshops brengen we gereedschappen, vaardigheden en pedagogische methoden samen om onze relatie met de omgeving te onderzoeken door middel van non-verbale communicatie met anders-dan-menselijke entiteiten. Geïnspireerd door natuurlijke communicatienetwerken zoals mycelium, vragen we ons af hoe we een betekenisvolle, wederzijdse dialoog kunnen aangaan met de wereld om ons heen en een dieper gevoel van onderlinge verbondenheid kunnen bereiken.

Welke informatie verzamelen we om ons heen, wat is leesbaar, en wat begrijpen we, interpreteren we en projecteren we er betekenis op? Wat gaat er verloren in de vertaling? Kunnen we ons comfortabel voelen met miscommunicatie en het onbekende?

''Samen zijn we een woud!

Het maakt niet uit welke vorm we in dit woud hebben of welke geluiden we maken, we zijn allemaal met elkaar verbonden in een chaotische polyfonie. We hebben elk onze eigen persoonlijkheid, maar zijn zinvol als een geheel. De wind is een vitale kracht in ons ecosysteem en begeleidt ons door onze cycli. Zijn onvoorspelbare aard houdt onze gemeenschap in stand, hij brengt ons op mysterieuze manieren de energie die we nodig hebben.

Een echo in de wind bracht ons een gerucht: de wind zou stil kunnen worden, wat het evenwicht van ons unieke ecosysteem zou bedreigen... en sneller dan we ons kunnen voorstellen... we weten dat, omdat we ons op onze eigen unieke manier afstemmen op de wind en op elkaar. We doen dat met de hulp van symbiotische metgezellen die ons helpen de boodschappen van de wind te kanaliseren en die onze zorgen en hoop overbrengen zodat de wind er rekening mee kan houden.

De wind begrijpt geen woorden, maar misschien alleen intenties door middel van geluiden, trillingen en slagen, dat is hoe we boodschappen versturen en interpreteren.

Onze metgezellen zijn gemaakt van geëxtraheerde mineralen en oliën die zijn omgevormd tot componenten die we bij anderen in ons ecosysteem hebben weggegooid...

Als de wind met een bepaalde kracht en in een bepaalde richting waait, komen we samen om onze wensen naar de wind te sturen.....''
