Linux is an open source operating system, it is not owned by big tech companies, has many many different distributions, and has much better security and privacy than Microsoft and Apple. It also has a lot of customization abilities, which empowers choice and autonomy in the tools we use everyday. I will demo installing Linux on a computer and participants are welcome to follow along while we troubleshoot and answer questions. I would like this session to be collaborative, trouble-shooting-focused, and welcome anyone else with knowledge about Linux distributions and functions to feel encouraged to chime in.

Participants are invited to join with:

  • old unused computers / laptops
  • usb flash drive

Timeline

  • 10 min explaining Linux, different distributions
  • 20 min flashing Linux OS to USB using BalenaEtcher or Rufus, free softwares; and making a partition
  • 20 min booting Linux and exploring
  • 20 installing to partition
  • (time added in each step for trouble-shooting and questions if participants are following along)

Access Note

  • no experience necessary, bring own computer and flash drive (unless H&D has extra?), English language
